Levels and points
Software engineer skill levels, based on real work.
Your level shows how well you work, from L1 to L5. Your points show how much effort you put in. Both come from what your AI teammates see in your code and your explanations. There are no quizzes.
The five levels.
Each level is earned by showing it in your work, across eight skills.
Has joined the team and works in an existing project. Finishes small, clear tasks with help.
Can be trusted to finish a task alone. Takes feedback well and explains their work.
Works independently on whole features. Makes good design choices without close checking.
Shows senior skills in most areas: shapes the design, reviews other people's code, and handles unclear tasks. More evidence is still needed.
Senior skills confirmed in all eight areas over time, including helping others learn.
The eight skills we look at.
Your AI teammates look for these in every task, code review and walkthrough.
Writing correct code, and understanding why it works.
How you organise the parts of a system and its data, and the trade-offs you choose.
Whether you think about what can go wrong, keeping data safe, and what happens after release.
What you do when a task is unclear: ask questions, narrow it down and decide.
Whether you finish what you start and fix what you broke.
How clearly you explain your decisions in writing, in walkthroughs and in conversations.
How you respond to feedback on your code, and later, how you review others.
Whether you help others and share what you learn.
How you earn points. Points reward real effort.
When you go further than asked, like spotting a problem nobody pointed out, the AI teammate who saw it writes a note. The note is rated against one of the eight skills and gives you points. Points help tell apart two people at the same level. An L2 can earn more points than an L4.
"Spotted that two sign-ups with the same email could both pass the check, and raised it before review."
A portfolio anyone can check.
Your portfolio is one page with your level and the work behind it. Share it with a link. Nothing is public until you share it.
Your level
And the eight skills behind it.
The evidence
Every rating links to the work it came from.
Your points
The effort recorded across your projects.
Your GitHub history
The code is yours, in your own repository.
